* At the time of inspection there were several pens that were in need of having additional shade installed or of having the shade that is currently in place moved in a manner that allows for al dogs access to shade and protects them from the direct rays of the sun. The pens are as follows. The pens on the south side of the garage kennel The pens on the east side of the Jack building.-

* At the time of inspection there were several pens that were observed to have broken wires in the flooring, divider panels that had broken wires and divider panels that were bent downward. These items are in need of being replaced or repaired in a manner that protects the dogs enclosed from possible injury. The pens are as follows: Pens 2 & 3 counting from the north on the west side of the big reefer building (hole in wire flooring due to broken wire mesh). Pen # 1 counting from the north end on the west side of the Old sundowner building. (broken wire). These were puppies that were in being sold and transported. All puppies need to be identified with an individual identification whenever they leave the facility for sale or transit. * At the time of inspection the mesh wire flooring in all pens on the west side of the Lewis building was observed to be broken and bent. This flooring was observed to have sharp points and edges and well as broken holes in the wire flooring. Total replacement is needed for this section of flooring. No new dogs can be housed in these pens until the wire mesh flooring has been replaced. To be corrected by: 08-05-2004.-

* At the time of inspection the pen containing three terriers on the east side of the new sundowner building does not provide the adequate amount of space for the dogs enclosed within.-

* At the time of inspection the pen containing 4 Bichon on the west side of the New building does not provide the adequate amount of space for the dogs enclosed within.-
These dogs are in need of being moved to pens where the space requirements are met. To be corrected by: 07-19-2004.-

* At the time of inspection there was three drain pipes that had fallen off of their connections. This allows for the drainage from these three drains in two different buildings, to pool up and stand in puddles. These wet areas are breeding and living areas for pests and vermin. These drain pipes are in need of being reconnected in a manner that removes the drainage of water and feces from the area directly around these two kennel buildings. To be corrected by: 07-17-2004.-

* At the time of inspection the north end inside area of the Lewis building was observed to have an accumulation of rodent feces as well as a large enough hole in the wall to allow for the passage of rodents. An effective method of preventing and controlling rodents is in need of being implemented in this building. To be corrected by: from this date forward.-

Fire kills breed dogs

A fire in rural Decatur County claimed the lives of several breeding dogs and destroyed a barn Saturday evening.
Fire Chief Bill Cathcart said the call came in around 6:55 p.m. and both the Decatur County Rural fire department and Beaver Valley responded.

Chief Cathcart said the owner had been burning trash nearby and the barn caught on fire. Jeff Fortin owns the barn located about nine miles north and three and a half west of Oberlin.

The dogs were in pens close to the barn and Mr. Fortin lost several in the fire, said Chief Cathcart, although he didn-t know how many. The barn was being used for storage, so the total loss is around $40,000. Some of the trees in the creek bed also burned. The firefighters were at the scene for about four hours.
